Oral Medicine and Radiology
Oral Medicine and Radiology is the specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and medical management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders affecting the mouth and jaws. The Radiology part of the subject equips the budding dentists in the field of diagnosis using conventional and advanced imaging modalities.
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology at the Institute of Dental Studies and Technologies fosters the development of dental graduates and postgraduates with adequate knowledge, necessary skills and reasonable attitude, which are required for carrying out all activities appropriate to general dental practice involving prevention, diagnosis & treatment of all Dental & Maxillofacial pathologies. In Oral and Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology, training in detail about the techniques and interpretation of intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs and radiographic diagnosis of the Dento-Maxillofacial Pathoses are provided.
Since its inception, the OMR unit is witnessing a steady progress in all dimensions. Presently the department has post graduate course with intake of 3 students each year. The department is having latest advanced equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and focusses on Cone Beam Computed Tomography as a part of Digital Dental Radiology Section with fully automated dental chairs, Tobacco Cessation Clinic, specialised sections including Biopsy Clinic, TENS and Therapeutic Ultrasound Clinics. The departmental library is equipped with latest editions of Oral Medicine, Radiology & Differential Diagnosis Reference books. The departmental research work has been acclaimed at various levels.

Professor & Head of the Department
Professor Dr. Upasana Sethi Ahuja is a graduate of Agra University and completed her postgraduate studies at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru. She brings over two decades of distinguished academic, administrative, and clinical experience in the field of Oral Medicine and Radiology.
As Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Ahuja provides strategic academic leadership, overseeing curriculum planning, faculty development, postgraduate training, and departmental administration. She is deeply committed to maintaining high standards of teaching, clinical excellence, research, and ethical practice, while fostering a supportive and student-centric learning environment.
She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and has completed a Fellowship in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), Orofacial Pain, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, and Dental Sleep Medicine from Roseman University College of Dental Medicine, USA. In addition, she holds a Master’s degree in the same specialties from Roseman University, reflecting her advanced expertise in contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
Professor Dr. Ahuja is a Founder Member of the Indian Academy of Dental and Facial Pain and an Elite Member of the Indian Orofacial Pain Association, underscoring her leadership role and recognition in the specialized field of orofacial pain at a national level.
She has authored and co-authored more than 35 scientific publications in reputed national and international journals and actively contributes to academic scholarship by serving as a reviewer for various peer-reviewed journals, supporting the advancement of evidence-based research and clinical practice.
Professor Dr. Ahuja has been an invited guest speaker at numerous national and international conferences, including the 3rd ISCoD / ISLSM Congress, Bali, Indonesia; 2nd Congress of the SAAPD and the 3rd Annual Conference of the NAPD, Kathmandu, Nepal; World Laser Medicine Congress, Taiwan; 16th Asian Pacific Association for Laser Medicine and Surgery (APALMS 2018), Bangkok, Thailand; International Summit on Oral Submucous Fibrosis, Vadodara; 16th Asian Pacific Association for Laser Medicine and Surgery; XXX National Conference of IAOMR, Udaipur; and the 1st Maharashtra State Oral Medicine & Radiology UG Conference, Pune.
She has served as an Executive Committee Member of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology (IAOMR) and as the Organising Chairperson for the 29th National Conference of IAOMR, reflecting her strong leadership, organizational skills, and contributions to professional development at a national level.
Her commitment to academic excellence and capacity building is evident through her active involvement in conducting workshops and hands-on training programs across India in Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders, Sleep Apnoea, Occlusal Analysis, and Splint Therapy. She has also served as a Resource Person for Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programs, contributing significantly to clinician training and knowledge dissemination.
Additionally, Professor Dr. Ahuja served as the Organising Chairperson for the CDE program titled “Decoding the Enigma of Orofacial Pain and TMDs”, held at IDST, Modinagar. Under her leadership, the department emphasizes integrated patient care, evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and research-oriented learning, preparing students to meet both academic and clinical challenges with confidence.

An undergraduate student in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is concerned with detailed recording of case histories and should be able to identify different oro facial disorders including mucosal lesions such as vesiculobullous diseases, precancerous and cancerous lesions TMJ and Salivary gland disorders.
